How to Identify Your Lip Shape

No tools needed. A mirror and 60 seconds is all it takes.

01

Relax Your Face

Stand in natural daylight facing a mirror. Let your mouth rest completely naturally — no smiling, no pursing. You want to see your lips exactly as they sit at rest.

02

Check Your Upper Lip

Look at the center of your top lip. Is there a sharp V-shaped dip (heart/bow)? A gentle curve? Or mostly flat with little definition (thin/wide)? The upper lip shape is the biggest identifier.

03

Compare Upper to Lower

Are both lips roughly the same fullness? Or is one noticeably larger? Fuller upper = top-heavy. Fuller lower = bottom-heavy. Equal and plump = full lips. Equal and slim = thin lips.

04

Check Corners & Width

Do your outer corners angle slightly downward at rest (downturned)? Are your lips wider than your nose (wide)? Compact and circular (round)? Corner angle and width are the final identifiers.

All 9 Lip Shapes — Illustrated & Explained

Every shape with a visual illustration, how to identify it, and expert makeup guidance tailored to it.

Shape 01

Heart-Shaped

A sharp, pronounced V-dip at the center of the upper lip with a fuller, rounded lower lip. The overall outline resembles a heart — fuller in the center, tapering at corners. One of the most distinctive natural shapes.

Cupid's BowSharp, deep V-peaks
Lower LipRounded, plump
WidthModerate, tapers
RarityUncommon
Makeup tip: Trace the natural bow precisely — it's your signature feature. A rosy or berry gloss in the center of the lower lip enhances the heart outline. Avoid overlining corners; the natural taper is the appeal.
Shape 02

Bow-Shaped

A defined cupid's bow with soft, gentle curves — like an archer's bow rather than a sharp V. The upper lip has a clear M-arc; the lower lip is wider and somewhat flatter. Considered rare and highly coveted.

Cupid's BowDefined, soft U-arc
Lower LipWide, flatter
WidthModerate to wide
RarityRare — coveted
Makeup tip: Don't over-exaggerate. Follow your natural line with neutral liner, apply lipstick, then sharpen edges with a thin concealer brush to make the bow pop without altering its shape.
Shape 03

Full Lips

Natural volume throughout — upper and lower lips are plump with roughly equal fullness. The vermilion border is clearly visible. Lips appear naturally prominent without makeup. The most universally desired shape.

BalanceEven top & bottom
VolumeNaturally plump
BorderWell-defined
RarityCommon
Makeup tip: Bold colours — reds, plums, deep berries — sit beautifully here. Apply darker at edges, lighter in center for dimension. Satin finish is ideal. Avoid heavy glossing which can look overdone.
Shape 04

Thin Lips

Less natural volume on both lips. The vermilion border is less pronounced and lips can appear slim when smiling. Elegant and refined — very common across all ethnicities and increases with age as collagen decreases.

VolumeLow overall
BorderSubtle edge
LookSlim, elongated
RarityVery common
Makeup tip: Overline max 1mm with a nude liner. Apply a light peachy or shimmery gloss in the center of both lips to create visual fullness. Dark mattes compress thin lips further — avoid them.
Shape 05

Round Lips

Nearly as wide as tall — a compact, circular shape with soft corners and minimal tapering. Looks naturally pouty from all angles. A soft cupid's bow gives a youthful appearance without dramatic peaks.

ShapeEqual W & H
CornersSoft, minimal taper
LookPouty, youthful
RarityLess common
Makeup tip: Slightly emphasise the cupid's bow with a liner one shade darker. A touch of gloss in the center adds depth. Warm pinks and corals complement this shape. Avoid very dark shades that minimise its natural pout.
Shape 06

Wide Lips

Extends further horizontally than average — noticeably broader relative to the face. Creates a friendly, open expression. The cupid's bow is typically moderate; horizontal breadth is the defining feature.

WidthNoticeably wide
FullnessModerate
LookBroad, friendly
RarityLess common
Makeup tip: Concentrate colour in the center. Apply a slightly darker shade at outer corners to draw the eye inward. A lip ombré (darker outer, lighter center) works especially well on this shape.
Shape 07

Downturned

Outer corners angle slightly downward at rest, giving a naturally pouty expression. Not a flaw — simply the angle of the corner muscles. The lip body can be full or thin; the corner direction is the defining trait.

CornersPoint downward
ExpressionNaturally pouty
BodyCan be full or thin
RarityModerately common
Makeup tip: Stop lining just short of each corner's natural downward end, then redirect slightly upward. Long-wear liquid lipstick prevents corner bleeding. Bold, bright center colour draws focus away from the corners.
Shape 08

Top-Heavy

Upper lip noticeably fuller than the lower. Upper lip takes center stage, projects more, and draws focus to the cupid's bow area. The lower lip appears understated in comparison.

UpperFuller, prominent
LowerThinner, flatter
FocusCupid's bow area
GoalVisual balance
Makeup tip: Darker shade on upper, lighter on lower. Slightly overline the lower lip with liner. Matte finish on upper + gloss on lower creates visual balance and harmony between the two lips.
Shape 09

Bottom-Heavy

Fuller lower lip compared to a thinner upper. Lower lip projects naturally and commands attention. A naturally sensual shape — many people specifically try to achieve this look with fillers.

LowerFuller, projecting
UpperThinner, flatter
LookSensual pout
GoalLift the upper
Makeup tip: Slightly overline upper lip with liner, focusing on outer thirds. Lighter/brighter shade on upper. Gloss on upper only. Matte on lower lip reduces emphasis on existing fullness.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the lip shape analyzer?

The photo and camera analysis uses pixel-level lip detection measuring cupid's bow depth, width-to-height ratio, upper vs lower balance, and corner angle. Accuracy depends heavily on photo quality and lighting — a clear, well-lit, front-facing photo with lips completely relaxed gives the best result. Every result includes a confidence percentage. Below 70%, we recommend the manual measurement method which is always the most reliable since it uses your own precise numbers.

Is my photo stored or shared?

No. All analysis runs entirely inside your browser. Your photo never leaves your device and is never uploaded to any server. The camera feed is processed locally and discarded immediately after analysis. We collect, store, and transmit zero images or biometric data of any kind.

What is the rarest lip shape?

A sharply defined, perfectly symmetrical cupid's bow — where the upper lip has very pronounced, sharp double peaks — is considered the rarest natural lip shape. Bow-shaped lips with a clearly defined but softer M-arc are also uncommon. Most people have some degree of cupid's bow curvature, but a truly sharp, symmetrical one is genuinely rare.

Can my lip shape change over time?

Yes. Lips lose collagen and fat gradually with age — the cupid's bow softens, the vermilion border becomes less defined, and overall volume decreases. These changes are most visible from the 40s onwards. Daily SPF lip balm, consistent hydration, a weekly gentle exfoliation, and avoiding smoking all significantly slow visible changes.

What's the difference between heart-shaped and bow-shaped lips?

Heart-shaped lips have a sharp, deep V-dip at the upper lip center with a rounded, plump lower lip — the outline resembles a heart. Bow-shaped lips also have a defined cupid's bow, but the dip is shallower and softer — more like an archer's bow than a pointed heart. The lower lip on bow-shaped lips is typically wider and flatter than on heart-shaped lips.

What makeup works best for thin lips?

Overline by 1mm maximum using a nude or pink lip liner close to your natural lip colour. Apply a light, peachy or shimmery lipstick or gloss in the center of both lips — the lighter center creates an optical illusion of depth and fullness. Avoid dark matte lipsticks entirely — they visually compress thin lips further. Long-wear formulas also help since thin lip borders are prone to bleeding.

How do I identify my lip shape without uploading a photo?

Use our manual measurement method — it's actually the most accurate option. You need a soft ruler and a mirror. Measure four things with your face relaxed: (A) total lip width corner to corner, (B) upper lip height from cupid's bow peak to lip edge, (C) lower lip center height to lower edge, (D) cupid's bow depth from peak to center dip. Enter these into the Measurements tab for an accurate result with no camera required.

About This Guide

Lip Shape Chart is a free, private, ad-free reference built for anyone who wants to understand their natural lip features without being sold anything. All information here — the analysis logic, makeup tips, and shape descriptions — is grounded in established makeup artistry principles and published facial anatomy research.

Lip shape identification relies on four observable characteristics: cupid's bow definition, upper vs lower balance, corner angle, and horizontal width relative to face proportion. These are the same criteria trained makeup artists and aesthetic practitioners use.

The analyzer tool uses on-device processing only. No images ever leave your browser. If you prefer not to upload a photo, the manual measurement tab gives equally reliable results.
